Honoring the Late Adjusting Great, Mark Hoversten
Adjuster Talk - Feb 20, 2020
For over two decades, Mark Hoversten dedicated his professional career to the insurance adjusting industry. After pivoting from running a roofing company in Central Iowan, Mark started his adjusting career in 1992 after the destruction caused by Hurricane Andrew. For the next 28 years, Mark focused his career on crop liability claims, large commercial loss claims, and high-end residential claims. Today, in honor and memory of the late adjusting great, Mark Hoversten, I share an encore of a previous podcast episode with Mark where he explained why it’s critical for new insurance adjusters to build a solid reputation and the challenges many new adjusters face when beginning their careers. He discussed the impact that turning down deployment opportunities can have on a new adjuster’s future career and why it’s beneficial for new adjusters to learn how to handle a wide variety of claims before narrowing their niche. He also shared the challenges he faced throughout his adjusting career and how he balanced raising a family while being deployed in the field. “The one thing you have to understand is - your territory is going to be the entire United States. You have to be willing to travel.” This week on Adjuster Talk: Why he decided to start his career after the destruction of Hurricane Andrew How he handled long breaks from deployment How he balanced raising a family while working claims The challenges Mark faced throughout his career and what new adjusters should be prepared for The importance of staying open to new deployment opportunities Mark’s description of a “dream adjusting firm” The importance of building a strong reputation His thoughts on the staff adjusting process Connect.
